Bob Bartlett, son of a Newfoundland seafaring family, gave up the life of a fisherman for the challenges of the great frozen reaches of the Far North. As a member of Robert Peary's expedition to the North Pole in 1898, he began an involvement with the Arctic that was to last all his life. He became famous as the "Master Mariner of the North," and for over half a century traveled by sail, by sled, on foot and by sheer will power over icy wastes where the price of a single false step was disaster. On a special mission during World War II he sailed his schooner the Effie M. Morrissey through waters he alone could navigate. His amazing exploits have become one of the greatest legends of the Arctic. An inspiring story of a man of superb courage and of a ship that would not die.
