From the moment she put on a pair of skates, Mabel wanted to figure skate—and be the best. But in 1930, only white people were allowed at ice rinks and in the clubs that trained competitive skaters.
Mabel didn't let that stop her. She found her own coaches and places where she could practice. She skated in ice shows, dazzling audiences with her spectacular spins and leaps. And when Mabel became a coach, she encouraged her students to believe in themselves. She also successfully pushed the skating clubs to change their rules and give every talented figure skater a chance to compete.
This is the true story of the first African American inducted into the US Figure Skating Hall of Fame.
