This is the story of Harriet Beecher Stowe, author and philanthropist, and it is spun in this most beautifully written and affectionate biography. Winifred Wise tells us of Hattie's girlhood in a house full of children, and of Lyman Beecher, her father, lovable but rigidly Calvinistic. From the early days, Hattie loved to read and indulge her natural talent for writing. Throughout most of her life, including her marriage, there was a lack of money. But with the unbounding success of Uncle Tom's Cabin, Hattie entered the limelight. She was now rich with living and rich with achievement.
This book is a warm tribute to a great woman who portrayed the whole background of what today is called the civil rights movement. Thus Hattie Beecher comes vividly out of the past and into the present.
