Book Guide

This is the story of Mary of Orange's life from childhood until her accession to the throne in 1689. We are told of her early life in the Court of Charles II with her family and her friends against the historical background of the time. At the age of fifteen she was married to the Prince of Orange to form an alliance with Holland, where she went to live and where her beauty and good nature made her a favourite with her subjects. We read also of events in England at this time, of Mary's feelings when her cousin Monmouth is executed and later when her father is forced to abdicate. The climax of the story comes when William and Mary are crowned as joint sovereigns of England.

This is a moving story with an authentic historical background, almost all the characters being drawn from surviving records, and the fascinating description of the times will interest all young readers.
