Gilberto has an interesting friend, who is completely unpredictable. His name is Wind.
Gilberto says of him, "Wind loves to play with the wash on the line. He blows the pillow cases into balloons and shakes the sheets and twists the apron strings. And he pulls out all the clothespins that he can. Then he tries on the clothes—though he knows they're too small."
Wind is good company for a small boy: sometimes he whispers to Gilberto; sometimes he roars and tears things apart, then later says nothing at all in the stillness.
The artist's magic pencil catches the wind's many moods in great sweeps across double pages, while the whole of Gilberto—hands and stance as well as his expressive face—reflects his changing response to his changeable playmate.
