Here in a series of lovely lithographs that form a glowing pageant of colonial life the d'Aulaires have depicted for little children the life of George Washington up to the time he became the "Father of His Country."
It is a story, not of dates and biographical details, but of the little boy George growing up on a plantation in the Virginia not so far removed from the wilderness his great grandfather had found, learning to love the soil, and the products of it, learning to ride horseback, leading his brothers and sisters in games, going to school, studying surveying, joining in the hunts and other gaieties of Mount Vernon—and as he grew older taking a part in the affairs first of Virginia, and then of the struggling colonies as a whole.
The d'Aulaires worked for two years on this picture book of George Washington, absorbing every detail not only of his life but of the life of his times. They acquired enough information and facts for several books, and then with a rare story-telling instinct not only in the text but in the pictures they translated it all into the terms of a child's understanding.
George Washington is an original and really American picture book—and one of the loveliest to come from the gifted creators of Ola.
