In the summer of 1856, at the age of fourteen, Daniel Hall sailed out of New Bedford harbor excited by the prospect of his first whaling voyage and prepared for a long stay at sea. But nothing had prepared Daniel for the adventures that lay ahead of him. Twenty-four months later, Daniel had jumped ship to evade a cruel captain. Instead of choosing the lush South Sea islands for desertion, however, he took his leave of the Condor at Shantar Bay. Injured and feverish, he was alone of the coast of Siberia with winter fast approaching.
Jerome Beatty, Jr., has studied old newspaper accounts, documents, and Daniel Hall's own writings. The result is an authentic historical adventure story made even more exciting by the fact that it actually happened.
