No one thought Susan and Frederick would become friends.
Back then, men and women weren't supposed to be friends. You weren't supposed to hang out with someone whose skin was a different color than yours.
But Susan and Frederick knew these ideas were wrong. They were alike on the inside: they both believed that all people should be treated the same. So the two friends decided to fight for equal rights—together. And they remained friends when angry mobs gathered, rotten eggs flew, and arsonists attacked.
Their friendship lasted over forty-five years—and helped change America, too.
