Book Guide

A great Douglas fir tree crashes through the underbrush, coming to rest on the moss-covered floor of a rain forest on the Pacific Coast of Washington. The tree, which has lived and grown for hundreds of years, will now begin the long process of decay, but it will still be important to the forest. Deer will make their beds there. Flying squirrels will sail down from the surrounding trees to hunt for nuts and insects. Tiny hemlock seedings will take hold and grow along the top of the log.

The evocative text and exquisite detailed drawings of Forest Log tell about a unique biological community, nurtured by the moist ocean air, and about the role that every tree plays when it falls.
