On Christmas morning, Flicka, Ricka and Dicka receive new skates fastened to white shoes. What a fine chance they have to use them on the frozen pond at Uncle Jon's house.
Mike, their little white dog with one brown ear, frolics with them on the ice, as does a boy named Bertie who is eager to join in. The fun suddenly ends when both Mike and Bertie tumble through some thin, weak ice.
This picture-book story is presented in the language and light of a child's own experience. Furthermore, Maj Lindman cleverly points out that it is never rewarding or wise to be unkind to animals. The text has been checked against the Thordike Word List for reading difficulty and is the seventh book about the popular little Swedish girls.
Besides the fun of the story itself, the striking, full-color pictures greatly enhance the feeling of reality in the rescue of Mike and Bertie.

Flicka, Ricka Dicka and Their New Skates
Reviewed by Sherry Early
What a lovely Christmas gift this book, with its accompanying set of triplet paper dolls, would be for a doll-playing or ice skating little girl. Flicka, Ricka, and Dicka are Swedish triplets from the 1930’s who each receive a pair of “shiny skates on white shoes” for Christmas. The three blonde Scandinavians go to visit their Uncle Jon and Aunt Lisa after Christmas, and as they are out skating on the pond they make a new friend and have a rather breath-taking adventure.
