What is and where is Flatland? We dare not tell you too much because one reviewer has stated that "any man thast shall pretend to know what this book means is of necessity a humbug.: Is it a satire on the follies of our time? Some people think so. Is it an attempt to make fun of those who believe there is a fourth dimension? Probably. Is it a work of fiction? Certainly. Is it pure geometry? Undoubtedly. How can it be all these things? Read and discover for yourself.
All we will tell you is this: The women of Flatland are straight lines, in fact, they are shaped like needles, so that the laws of the country compel them to move only in one direction continually uttering the "peace cry", let they should wound one of the men—perhaps a square or a polygon—by appearing in unexpected places before the latter has opportunity to turn around. If this does not sound sensible, read the book and see how logical it all is.
