Flag Day explains how this holiday came into being; and it tells the story of our American flag, as well as many of the customs and rules for handling and displaying it.
From the first truly American flag, said by some to have been sewn by Betsy Ross, to the Star-Spangled Banner of today, our flag has changed as our nation grew.
The real "Father of Flag Day" was a Wisconsin schoolteacher, but there were other "fathers" too. Then in 1916 President Wilson proclaimed June 14 the official date for the holiday.
The author traces all this for beginning readers. She also explains such matters as the meaning of an American flag flown at half-staff, how to raise and lower it properly, and how to use the flag with respect.
Lively illustrations by Ed Emberley capture all the fun and excitement as well as the patriotic spirit of a holiday boys and girls take pride and delight in celebrating.
