As a member of an anti-slavery society, Jehudi Ashmun was assigned to take a shipload of Negro emigrants to a new colony in the jungles of Africa. Here he found a cause which inspired his compassion for the oppressed and fired his imagination—to establish colonies for American Negroes in Africa and help destroy slavery in the United States. For ten years he fought the slave trade, led raids against slave "factories" and invited freed slaves to his colony. Appointed governor of the new nation of Liberia in 1825, Ashmun developed the country's commerce, education and government so skillfully that he helped make it possible for Liberia to become the first independent Negro Republic in Africa. A fascinating story of one of the unsung heroes in the struggle against tyranny and evil.
