His one big "fiddle"claw raised like a shield, this tiny crab scuttles along the shore and into his burrow. Often he keeps the big claw athwart the opening.
Enemies are always about and they include his fellows, who will enter his burrow or snatch food from his feeding area.
He had enemies even when he was a larva among other plankton drifting on the surface waters of the sea. As a weird, tiny monster out there, he struggled through the early stages of his eventful life cycle.
This story has been written for the child to read himself. So for simplicity of exposition the Fiddler Crab is individualized, but not humanized. The details are scientifically accurate; they have been checked by a member of the Department of Invertebrate Zoology of the American Museum of Natural History.
