Before daylight one morning Hal and Peggy Morrow were rushed from their parents' home in England to a hasty conference with Uncle Edwin, then aboard the packet ship FairWind, bound for the colony of Virginia.
Their father had been accused of talking and writing against the King and in England in 1773 that was a serious offense. The family would be re-united some day, but now the children faced the adventure of traveling alone to Williamsburg.
There Governor Dunmore, who was expected to befriend them, turned them away. Good friends took them in and Hal found a job with the young barrister Thomas Jefferson. He proved so reliable that he carried important messages to the Palace and the Capitol, up and down Duke of Gloucester Street.
These were days of turmoil in Virginia, which was moving into the Revolution, and the children were swept up in a stream of events that make a most exciting story.
