No happier, merrier, more mischievous little boy ever lived than Edvard Grieg. When he was a tiny lad in Bergen, his mother was kept uneasy lest he fall from the rocks—and he frequently did—while imitating the fishermen as they unloaded their boats. In later years when the family had moved to the country, there were hills and fields to play in, but young Edvard still loved the more adventurous games.
Some of this freedom-from-mundane-matters certainly found its way into the glorious music he wrote and played. To the end of his life Edvard Grieg found beauty and joy in every passing day though, as we all know, many of those days were anything buy gay.
Sybil Deucher has captured all the fine spirit of the boy and the man in this simple, straightforward story of his life told for children. Into it she has woven parts of his best-known and best-loved music.
Children after reading it will find themselves speaking of Grieg as of a friend, and of his music as something dearly familiar, a natural part of their happiest days. To read Edvard Grieg's story and to play his music while yet the story is fresh and new to one's reading experience should be part of every child's musical education.
