There are many kinds of trolls: mountain trolls, forest trolls, water trolls, trolls with one head, trolls with three heads, trolls with twelve heads. Most of them were bachelors and lived by their lonely selves, others had wives, who were as ungainly as their husbands. Some kept cats, large black troll-cats with gleaming eyes. They had troll-cocks too, with green and purple feathers. And in their stables, deep in the mountains, stood their troll-steeds; they were huge and so fierce that flames spurted from their nostrils.
