Daniel Chapelier was a French Huguenot boy who lived with his family in Rhode Island on land that had been deeded to them in England. Like other Huguenots they had fled from France to escape the King's religious persecution.
Theirs was only a little settlement of cellar-huts but the Huguenots felt they would prosper if they were left alone. Unfortunately this was not to be so. Trouble started almost at once and poor Daniel was in the middle of it.
Like the other children he had many tasks which he did willingly but he longed for companions his own age. There were none in his settlement. Small wonder then that he and an Indian boy who lived nearby struck up a friendship even though association with the Narragansett Indians was forbidden.
This story of Daniel, his Indian friend and the Huguenot colony is based on fact. Places called Frenchtown and Drum Rock still exist. The author lives in Providence and is noted for her stories of colonial life and her radio program, STREETS OF THE CITY, which is about Rhode Island history and is now in its eleventh year on the air.
