At the age of four, George Armstrong Custer made up his mind that he would be a soldier when he grew up. Later on he determined to become a general and to make himself so famous that men would never forget his name. He won an appointment to West Point Military Academy when all of the odds seemed against his doing so. At twenty-one, he was made a general with the Union forces and was given the nickname, "The Boy General with the Golden Curls." For many years, he seemed to be Fortune's darling—until he pushed his luck too far.
The story of his life is as exciting as the stirring times in which he lived.
