It is the year 1209 and time for the gathering of the clan at the fort of the Red King of Connacht. The Irish nobles are to choose between Fergus, the King's son, and Felim, the King's brother, for the heir to the throne. But Fergus is missing, trapped within the monastery at Athenmore by a surprise advance of the Norman enemy. And Felim is secretly plotting the overthrow of the King.
Although the brave Princess Grania and the Red King dramatically rescue Fergus and bring him back to triumph in the election, Felim does not concede defeat easily. Nor is it always so simple to outwit the Normans. After further harassing by the Irish they take a terrible revenge. The Red King disappears and the children are captured and held prisoner in the stronghold of a Norman knight.
How they courageously work for the reconciliation of their father and the Normans, despite feuds within their own clans, makes a vivid and appealing story that skillfully conveys the excitement of life during the Norman Conquest. Imaginative line drawings illustrate the lively pageantry of feudal times.
