Here are the further adventures of that exuberant, typically American family, the Mitchells, during "the most beautiful summer they had ever known."
When Daddy came back to Washington after the war, he took a grand new job as hydraulic supervisor in Montreal — but the only house he could find which was large enough to hold his overflowing brood was a primitive old place in inaccessible, if idyllic, surroundings high above the city, and available for the summer only.
After part of the luggage failed to arrive, Mother discovered that it is possible to live happily without all the comforts which many of us consider indispensable, and the children were completely fascinated by the new simple life among delightful French-Canadian neighbors.
Old and new friends of the Mitchells — who are taken from Hilda van Stockum's own wonderful family — not only will enjoy this summer with them among the Canadian pines and lakes, but will want to meet them again, when they move to other quarters in the Fall.

The Mitchells: Canadian Summer & Friendly Gables
Reviewed by Sara Masarik
When Diane and I were preparing for our formal interview with Dr. John Tepper Marlin, son of Hilda van Stockum, he told us that people would often remark to his mother that she had “such interesting children.” Marlin said that his mother always chuckled at that remark because she thought that all children were interesting, but that most parents don’t listen much. Hilda was an astute observer of people, and children in particular. And John said that his mother was always listening to people, and afterward scribbling down detailed notes about their stories. All of her books were born out of overheard conversations, anecdotes from letters, and stories that people would tell her while with her.
