Charlie Miller lived on a big ranch out West. Although he was only ten years old he could ride just about any horse, broken or not, and the cowboys all called him Bronco Charlie. Charlie loved the ranch, but he dreamed of the day when he might become a rider on the famous Pony Express.
When Charlie got a chance to go to Sacramento, the Pony Express station was the first place he wanted to visit. That was how he happened to be present when the Pony Express horse galloped into town without a rider and how he actually got the opportunity to take the mail on to Placerville.
Henry Larom has told the story of Bronco Charlie's first ride for the Pony Express with excitement and suspense. And Wesley Dennis has provided the dramatic Western pictures only he can draw. Young readers will not be able to resist the combination and this story of one of the most memorable periods of our country's history.
