The story of one of England's first attempts at colonizing North America provides the background for this authentic tale of wilderness adventure. Thirteen years before the Pilgrim Fathers landed, a group of adventurous Englishmen plowed westward through rolling seas and furious storms to found a fur-trading colony on the desolate coast of Maine. With them went a young Indian brave, Skicoworos, who had been captured previously in this wild land, taken to England, and imprisoned there until the expedition set out. Around Skicoworos' questionable allegiance the action of this thriller revolves. To some of the crew the Indian seemed the savior of the expedition; to others he was nothing but a savage to be feared and distrusted.
Vividly the author has recreated a chapter from history and has filled it with scenes of tense action and suspense: a runaway jaunt that ended in near disaster, the long overdue return of the expedition to the land of the Abenakis Indians and narrow escapes from savages and bears.
