Up in the Pennsylvania hills is Blue Spring Farm—named after the clear blue water that fills the natural swimming pool. In the summer the farm becomes a camp for boys and girls, who swim and play and take piano lessons from Mr. T.
One year, fourteen-year-old Denis and his younger sister, Anne-Marie, learn that they are going to the farm. At first they are upset. They have come over from France only recently and they fear that the American children won't like them. And as for the music—what a gyp to spend their entire vacation practicing!
But the summer proves to be the best they have ever known. Mr. T. has more than a touch of genius and, to their surprise, Denis and Anne-Marie find real excitement in learning and improving and in encouraging Solveig, the brilliant pupil who hopes to play with the American Symphony.
There is also the excitement of exchanging ideas with the American children. Together they form a club and embark on the ambitious job of raising a huge crop of beets. What they do with the money they earn is the big surprise of the last chapter.
Blue Spring Farm is a special must not only for those interested in music, but for anyone who enjoys swimming races, amateur plays, delicious food, camping out, running a tractor, harvesting, and all the fun of a long summer in the country.
Since leaving France, Claire Huchet Bishop, well-known author of Pancakes-Paris, The Five Chinese Brothers, The Ferryman, Augustus, and The Man Who Lost His Head, has spent many vacations in Pennsylvania and she brings all her love for the hills and for music to this, her first book for older boys and girls.
