Book Guide

You know what a zoo is like in the summer—a friendly place where you can see zebras and tigers and big polar bears. But where do the animals go in the winter? Do zebras like snow? And what happens during a big storm?

Robert Bahr answers these questions by telling about the 1977 blizzard in Buffalo, New York, where a large open-air zoo flourishes year round.

The fresh excitement of the snow and wind prompted some animals to play vigorously. Others enjoyed the cozy security of being indoors. All are pictured in appealing yet realistic watercolors by Consuelo Joerns.

Her enthusiasm for the animals and their keepers is evident in each of the superb illustrations to be seen in this book.

Plumfield and Paideia

Bizzard at the Zoo
Reviewed by Sara Masarik
This unassuming picture book by Robert Bahr is excellent. Written in 1982, it has the quality of an older science reader-type book but it captures the more modern event of the 1977 blizzard at the Buffalo Zoo in New York.
