If you have not met Billy and his pony Blaze before, this is a good story to start with because it shows what really good friends the two are. Billy and Blaze have had many exciting adventures together, but in this story Blaze has a big adventure all by himself.
One day a gypsy caravan passing near Billy's home saw Billy and Blaze riding together. That night the gypsies returned and stole Blaze. The next morning Billy was heartbroken to find the stall empty, and he and his father searched everywhere for the beautiful pony. Days passed and still Billy could think of nothing but his lost pony—even his favorite cake could not revive his spirits.
Then one day, many, many miles from home, Blaze snapped the rope that kept him tied in the gypsy camp and away he went! For days he galloped cross country and at last found his way back to his beloved Billy.
With sensitive drawings and easy-to-read words, Mr. Anderson captures the warmth and gentle understanding a little boy and his pony feel for one another.
