This beautiful and unusual book tells of Appolonia and Dan who went to a one-room school in Pennsylvania. It is the story of the children who went to the school and had fun there. The little red school itself is part of the story; so is the teacher who showed the children how to use the lovely designs made by their Pennsylvania Dutch grandfathers and grandmothers. The book grew out of visits by the author to schools where just such activities were going on.
The pages show alternately the children and valentines—and the book suggests making "tokens of love and friendship" for any time of year, not only for St. Valentine's Day.
