In the animal kingdom the foot is a specialized tool of prime importance to its owner. Creatures of the water, the air, and the land present an endless variety in the structure and uses of their feet. Ducks have webbed feet for swimming, birds have claws for perching, and the cushioned feet of the camel carry it swiftly over the desert sand.
To begin his comprehensive survey, the author traces the evolution of animal feet and their adaptation to a particular environment. He then discusses the anatomy of the feet of mammals, insects, lizards, and birds. Grouping animals into those that run or jump, those that climb, those that swim or wade, and those that dig or scratch, he explains the characteristics of their feet, using a wide range of interesting example. In conclusion, he describes how animal feet are used as weapons and comments on the relative weakness of the human foot.
Written simply but accurately, and illustrated with the author's clear line drawings, the book will be a valuable reference for the nature student.
