It's November 1896, and Clara Maher and her mother are traveling clear across the United States to make a new life with Papa in California. On the long train journey, Clara tries to follow her father's advice: "Keep your eyes peeled, coming west. Out here, you never know what will happen next!"
Clara eagerly takes in all the sights of her trip, including a wanted poster for the notorious outlaw Butch Cassidy. But when snow blocks the train tracks in Wyoming, preventing Clara and Mama from meeting Papa on Thanksgiving Day, train robbers are suddenly a real possibility. How lucky that a passenger on the stuck train invites them to celebrate Thanksgiving with her friends! But just who are the boisterous "old cowhands" who throw the glorious feast?
Based on a real Thanksgiving banquet given in Brown's Hole, Utah, in the 1890s, An Outlaw Thanksgiving conjures up the Wild West with a delicious story that shows hospitality can be found where you least expect it.

An Outlaw Thanksgiving
Into a true account of an unusual 1896 Thanksgiving McCullyn inserts Clara Maher and her mother, traveling from New York to Utah to join Clara's father before they go on to California...The snowy watercolor illustrations are charming as are the many illustrations of warm and friendly outlaws; the story may be predictable, but it includes moments of exhilarating adventure.
