The Holy Land is the setting of not only the events which inspired the Bible stories themselves and of the crusades, but also of modern archaeological explorations which are still uncovering the exciting facts behind the stories which were once thought to be mythical.
Mary Chubb traces, under alphabetical headings as in the previous books in this series, the drama which began about 1800 B.C. when Abraham and his clan left Ur for Canaan. She tells of their struggle for survival, of the prophets and religious leaders of the Hebrew peoples and of the impact their lives have made on the world. She describes the finding of Solomon's tables, the Dead Sea Scrolls, and of the excavations at Masada. She touches on the origins of Christianity and shows how this, much later, brought the crusaders to the Holy Land.
Jill Wyatt's colourful drawings add richness and life to the whole saga.
The picture on the jacket is a mosaic floor in the Palace of Herod the Great at Masada. (Based on an illustration in Masada by Professor Y. Yadin and reproduced by courtesy of the author.)
