Book Guide

AMOS FORTUNE, FREE MAN is the story of a man who, born free in Africa, was sold in America as a slave. In time he purchased his own freedom, and was able to give freedom to several other people.

This dramatic story of a slave who achieved recognition as a free man and a worthwhile citizen is based on the life of an actual person. Amos Fortune lived from 1710 to 1801, and is buried beside his wife in a little cemetery on a hilltop in Jaffrey, New Hampshire.

AMOS FORTUNE, FREE MAN is a moving tale of a man who made the democratic ideal come true. It received a Newbery Medal Award for the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children, and the Herald Tribune Spring Festival Award for the most outstanding book in the "books for older children" group.

Plumfield and Paideia

Amos Fortune, Free Man

This book is incredible. The writing is of the highest quality. The storytelling is utterly compelling. The story itself is exceptionally interesting and inspiring. And, it beautifully straddles the line between history and hagiography. This is the kind of book that young people should read for many reasons. An absolute classic, I am left with only one question: Why didn’t I know anything about it until I was in my 40s?
