Here for young people is the rousing story of a great and fearless American figure, Ethan Allen, hero of Fort Ticonderoga and one of the first men who saw America's destiny and rebelled against authority from England.
Ethan Allen was truly America's Ethan Allen. One of the mightiest of the might builders of his country, he forged the state of Vermont out of the "Hampshire Grants" almost single-handed. Of giant size, he was also of giant strength and courage. It was his cry of "wolf hunt" that brought the Green Mountains out by by the hundred to defend their homes and lands against the tyranny of a distant king.
Ethan Allen's dramatic story is told here with vivid simplicity. In Mr. Holbrook's portrayal of the leader of the Green Mountain Boys there is the stillness and majesty of the northern primeval forest as well as the clash of steel, the sound of horses' hooves and the cries of men who were American soldiers before the United States was a country.
The exciting scenes in the life of Ethan Allen are given more vigour by Lynd Ward's stirring and beautiful full-color pictures. Through them the Green Mountain country when it was still a wilderness lives again as do its rugged, fearless defenders.
