This charming "mythology primer" for young children contains sixteen stories of the gods and goddesses of Mount Olympus and the heroes of Greek mythology. Miss Sellew has retold the ancient myths for today's children, using simple words and thoughts, so that they read something like fairy tales. She has chosen the stories which children are most likely to enjoy, as an elementary introduction to the treasures of mythological lore.
In this book the very youngest reader, or listener, will learn about the miraculous beings whose names and remarkable deeds are so often found in story and poem. The extraordinary nature of some of their performances does not make them seem less real to young imaginations. One of the things American children can really have in common with other children of the Western World is acquaintance with Jupiter and Juno, Vulcan, Prometheus, Hercules, Mercury, Pandora, Phaeton, Proserpina, Perseus, Pegasus and Bellerophon, and the rest. They will get to know them early and intimately by reading the book from cover to cover.
A brief index explains phonetically how the names should be pronounced.
Sixteen vivid illustrations and a brilliant jacket, all in color, by George and Doris Hauman enliven the stories.
