A long time ago—
There was a boy named
George Washington.
He lived on a big farm, with a lot
of land,
And fields, and tall trees near the house.
These lines tell about George Washington when he was a small boy, but when he grew older, Washington did so much for the United States that he became known as "the father of our country."
As he grew up Washington traveled, and made friends with people all over. He learned to be a soldier, and fought against the Indians. Then he led the army in the war against England so that this country could be free. After the war the people made him President so that he could keep on leading the country.
And today, every year on his birthday, February 22nd, we think of George Washington, the very first President of our country.
